Werder Bremen fans are hopeful for the second time in 4 days.

Werder Bremen looked really good on Tuesday. Wow, I haven’t said that in a long time. They looked threatening when going to goal. Their defense was average but improved. And I genuinely thought they’d be walking away from Tuesday’s home game against Borussia Monchengladbach with another win.

Bremen seemed to have new life in them following Saturday’s thrilling but tense game against Freiburg. Riding that high, they entered Tuesday’s game with a purpose. Though both teams failed to produce a dangerous opportunity in the first half, Bremen looked comfortable on the ball, roughly matching Monchengladbach in possession.

We saw a lot of Bremen in the second half. Bremen had a handful of positive attempts on goal to begin the second half, but they started to show real promise when Saturday’s goal scoring hero, Leonardo Bittencourt, was subbed into the game in the 62nd minute.

More from Bundesliga

He would prove to be dangerous in the attack as he sent the ball whizzing just above the crossbar ensuring that Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer had to stay on his toes.

Sommer also played a large role in Bremen’s success with a couple of disastrous plays when the ball was at his feet. As the game pressed on, Bremen pressed harder getting opportunity after opportunity that kept me sitting on the edge of my seat.

Ultimately the ice was never broken and the game finished in a 0-0 tie and yet I’m quite satisfied. Bremen showed a clear determination rarely seen throughout the course of this season.

Though Bremen’s victory over 7th place Freiburg was the better of the two results, Tuesday’s tie against a 4th place Monchengladbach that at times has been in the fight for the league title was nothing to be ashamed of.

Perhaps at another time in the season it would have been seen as a real accomplishment, but as they fight to escape relegation, unfortunately falling just short of striking gold is not enough.

That being said, hope remains high among the Werder Bremen camp. Fingers crossed it lasts beyond this game.
