Arsenal is making a serious mistake here.

Sigh. I know, you’re getting just as frustrated with the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang situation as I am. It’s the thing which bonds us Arsenal fans together the most, our collective annoyance of the complacent board.

The Gabon international runs out of contract at the end of next season, this is essentially chip paper news by now. However, the board is doing nothing to try and fix this. I mean, they just seem to be exacerbating things with every decision they make.

According to a new report from The Sun, Arsenal will keep ahold of Aubameyang until his contract expires, unless they receive a bid of over £20m. While this might look like good news at first glance, it’s not.

£20m, in the modern market, is a measly price. Even Andy Carroll cost more than that several seasons ago, so let alone what he would cost in today’s market. It’s silly to me to see our best player, captain and top talisman being sold for such a low fee.

Not only because he is worth more, but it leaves Arsenal with little scope to sign a like-for-like replacement. Strikers of his calibre are not worth £20m. They’re not even worth double, I would go as far as to say we should hold out for £60m.

Now, I’m no economist, and I’m definitely not disregarding the Coronavirus outbreak either. But as a fan, I see my club as being in control of the situation, which they should be. This means they would be able to hold out for such a fee, even if they struggle to get it.

Again, I don’t know the full extent of what’s going on behind the scenes. Aubameyang may have asked for a transfer, he may have not. I don’t tend to trust tabloid talk when it comes to that sort of stuff.

However, a common theme does tend to be emerging; Arsenal continue to lower their valuation of Aubameyang. This needs to stop, before we end up losing him for peanuts.
