Arsenal: Thomas Partey

Arsenal have endured a terrible season so far, with Unai Emery being sacked towards the end of November. Mikel Arteta has overseen some good results, but the Gunners are still languishing in 9th place ahead of an away match against Manchester City.

Arteta has tried to inculcate some of the principles that he learned at City during his stint as Pep Guardiola’s assistant, but he lacks a proper holding midfielder in the mold of Rodri or Fernandinho.

Lucas Torreira started well at the Emirates but has failed to live up to expectations, while Matteo Guendouzi is still inexperienced. Granit Xhaka has improved under Arteta, but is still prone to catastrophic errors.

At Atletico, Thomas Partey has silently become one of Europe’s premier defensive midfielders. The Ghanian international is an excellent ball-winner, and is also extremely comfortable on the ball which is required in Arsenal’s system.

He also has a brilliant work-rate, and would seamlessly slot into their current side. The 27-year-old would be an absolute bargain for his £42 million release clause, and looks destined to move to England soon.
