Guardiola confirms Sane’s desire to leave Manchester City.

Manchester City are set to lose one of their best players as Pep Guardiola confirmed that Leroy Sane wants to leave the club. According to ESPN, the Man City manager held a virtual press conference where he broke the news.

"“Leroy said he doesn’t want to extend the contract so it means he wants to leave and it’s going to happen this summer or at the end of the contract,” said Guardiola.“The club talked to me and he’s been offered two or three times to extend his contract and he rejected so he wants to play for another club.”Source: ESPN"

When asked if he intends to speak with Sane, Guardiola said that he would not.

What is interesting here is the fact that Manchester City actually tried to extend his contract a couple of times and each time Sane has declined. It does speak of a player who has made up his mind and is intent on leaving.

More from Manchester City

He has been linked with a move to Bayern Munich before the start of the season and is likely the place he will end up either this season or the next. Sane suffered a knee ligament injury in their Community Shield match against Liverpool and just reappeared on the bench in their 3-0 win against  Arsenal.

While Guardiola said that he would either leave in the summer or at the end of his deal, one would have to assume that it will be this summer. City are not going to allow a player of his talent to run out his contract and receive nothing back when he leaves.

The question then becomes how much money are Bayern willing to spend. Will they meet the price that City set or would they be willing to wait until his contract runs out and potentially sign him on a free transfer?

His impending departure is a huge blow to Manchester City who signed him from Schalke 04 back in 2016. The German quickly slotted into the side and played a pivotal role in the team’s league titles.

Perhaps playing for Bayern was too good of an opportunity to pass up and felt that he would be a more focal point there than at City. Maybe he was undecided and the fact that City might be banned from the Champions League pushed the scales towards leaving.

In many respects, City is going to have a tough time finding someone to replace. Even more so considering he’s only 24-years-old and still has plenty left to offer. As for Sane, he won’t be short of potential suitors.
