2. Angel Gomes

As Frank Lampard is looking to build a core of young, homegrown players, Angel Gomes may be his best bet. Currently playing for Manchester United, it doesn’t look likely that he will sign a contract extension with the Red Devils anytime soon, as he nears the end of his current Old Trafford contract.

With Manchester United on the hunt to sign Jack Grealish or James Maddison, this only raises more doubt over Gomes’ future. He will undoubtedly feel that his future is elsewhere, despite being a favourite among the fanbase.

Perhaps the best thing about Gomes, other than ageing at just 19 years old, is that he is versatile. The Englishman can play not just as a central midfielder, but he can also play on the left. This is something for Lampard to consider, and it is the same case for Timo Werner. Chelsea could be on the cusp of a real fluid attack if they sign Gomes, and it would also mean that Mason Mount isn’t forgotten about.

Gomes is more a goal scorer in his own right than he is a creator. He has scored four Premier League 2 goals this season, while providing two assists. These are impressive stats, given that he has only made five appearances in the youth domestic league.

He certainly has a promising future, which in the past would have put him off signing for Chelsea. However, given the emphasis Lampard has placed on playing young players, Gomes may be swayed to joining the Blues.
