These young guns set the top tier alight with their prodigious talents

The 2019/20 season in the Bundesliga drew to a close last Saturday, and boy what an epic ride that was!

Bayern Munich may have continued their dominance with an eighth consecutive title, there was plenty more to it than what just meets the eye.

We can go about all of them one by one, but let’s start with the best young players, shall we?

There are way too many talented young stars in the German top-tier, but these 10 players were particularly eye-catching and made waves:

(Only players who were aged 23 and younger at the start of the 2019/20 season have been considered)

#10 Suat Serdar (Schalke 04)

The Royal Blues were one the worst teams in the second-half of the campaign, winning none of their last 16 games, and that’s partly down to Serdar’s absence with injuries. Now that’s a testament to his importance to the side. A central midfielder by trade, the German international is strong in the air and has a keen eye for pass. He also struck seven times in the league, which is the highest in Schalke’s squad, believe it or not. Unfortunately, his season was cut short after sustaining a knee injury against Augsburg on 24 May as it ruled him out for the rest of the run in.

#9 Dayot Upamecano (RB Leipzig)

How is a talented defender like Upamecano still uncapped with France continues to be perplexing, for he’s been around the block for quite sometime and has proved his worth since joining RB Leipzig in 2017. This season though, might have been his best yet. The 21-year old was an unrelenting force at the back, and also made 2,282 passes – the 10th most in the Bundesliga, whilst also maintaining an 89% success rate! Many top shouts of Premier League have expressed interest in his services, while his long awaited debut with Les Blues too might be due soon.

#8 Marcus Thuram (Borussia Monchengladbach)

The Foals secured a memorable return to the Champions League for the first time since 2016, and the key to this endeavor was Thuram. Roped in from French side Guingamp last year, he’s the son of former World Cup winner Lilian Thuram, and showed he too possesses some leadership qualities like his legendary father. The 22-year old led the line with aplomb, even forging a menacing strike partnership with Alessane Plea upfront. He was particularly boisterous after the shutdown, and finished with 10 goals in the league, whilst also making eight assists – both of which are the most in Gladbach’s squad for this season.
