Chelsea fans and particularly Lampard should be pushing for this even more.

Chelsea have had a rough couple of weeks sine project restart. They came back from the break oozing with confidence and looked like they were unbeatable, particularly after essentially winning the Premier League title for Liverpool.

However, as is often the case in football, it wasn’t to last. Chelsea soon lost to West Ham disappointingly and they recently were blown out of the park by Sheffield United, which was significant in their race for top four.

The Blues sit third in the table, two points ahead of Manchester United who are in fifth. However, the Red Devils have a game in hand and given the form they are showing, they’ll likely capitalise on this and overtake Frank Lampard’s men. Given that Manchester City’s ban has been overturned, it’s now pivotal that clubs finish in the top four.

More from Chelsea FC

According to a new report from Bild, an oftentimes trustworthy German outlet, Kai Havertz has revealed that this is one condition should he sign for Chelsea; they must be playing in the Champions League next season.

Having won the competition once before, the Blues are known giants in this competition. Lampard clearly values it too, since winning this is his biggest career achievement to date. That said, qualifying for it next year has just become all the more important.

If Lampard wants Havertz to sign which he clearly does, then he will need to ramp up his players to go out and fight for more. They simply cannot afford to keep losing the games that they need to be winning. Every point is worth fighting for at this stage of the season.

This will require a change in defensive philosophy, undoubtedly. This has been what’s let Lampard down of late and he simply can’t stand around and let it happen, especially now that Havertz has put down this marker.
