Mikel Arteta may have found the man to fix Arsenal’s poor defence.

The key to any defence is consistency. You can’t be extraordinary in one game and then give away sloppy errors in the next. This is exactly the fate Arsenal have suffered this season since last night against the champions Liverpool they were incredible in their defence, but in the previous match against Tottenham they were poor.

While Mikel Arteta has improved the side defensively, he will be looking for some more consistency from his men. For this, the best place to look is externally. According to a new report from Goal, Arsenal have begun talks with Nice star Malang Sarr, who is out of contract and looking for a new club.

Should he be tempted by Arteta’s proposed project, then he would partner in the defence with fellow French youngster William Saliba. Having a core of French players has been a key throughout Arsenal’s history and it’s certainly not changed under Arteta.

Sarr is a good option to bring in since he has been playing consistently for Nice this season, obviously before Covid-19 put an end to the French campaign.

Sarr will be looking to persuade Didier Deschamps to bring him to EURO 2021, and Arsenal may be the best place for that. Deschamps is known to be a big advocate of Emirates Stadium players, and if he and Saliba can form a healthy working partnership then who knows? One of them could partner Raphael Varane on an international stage.

Where Saliba tends to be a no-nonsense type of player, Sarr likes to play the ball out from the back which is a nice contrast for Arteta to have available to him. The good news it, though, that Sarr isn’t half as clumsy as Luiz is, so this should lessen the blow of having the Brazilian in the XI.
