4 signings that could put Chelsea in next season’s title race
4. Ben Chilwell
Seeing Marcos Alonso attempt to run back on an opposition counterattack just once is all you need to be convinced that Chelsea need a new left-back. The name most linked with a move is Ben Chilwell.
Chilwell is young, he is English, he is a lifelong Chelsea fan, and he is the future of the Three Lions at left-back. In theory, this move makes perfect sense. But in reality, there is a huge problem and that is Leicester City.
Just as they did with Harry Maguire a year ago, they will only sell their best players for ridiculously overpriced fees, which is what they are doing again with Chilwell. Maguire was sold for £80m, and it seems like they want even more this time around.
The reason I selected Chilwell is that he is the best option out there, but the best option doesn’t always mean the most sensible option.
Where the centre-backs are concerned, sometimes overpaying can be worth it. But the left-back position is not a critical one on the pitch, and for that reason Lampard should not give in to them, and instead sign a cheaper alternative.
For example, Alex Telles of Porto and Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico are both available for around £25m, and both are reliable options. They may not be as promising as Chilwell, but they will get the job done.
The point is that Chelsea need a new left-back, so any significant upgrade on Alonso will automatically put them a step closer to challenging for the title.
Chelsea have a promising future ahead of them, but they still have a few steps they need to take before becoming title contenders. They can get them done in the transfer market.
With these signings, not to mention the young, exciting side Lampard has already assembled, they would be on course to challenge Liverpool and Manchester City next season and potentially bring the Premier League trophy back to Stamford Bridge.
