2. He is not who he once was

I could easily be one of the fans that is sentimental about Ozil. After all, he has been one of our best players in the last decade. I will never forget the jubilation I felt when we signed him from Real Madrid.

However, over the last few years, he has been deteriorating badly. It seems like whenever he has the odd good performance, we all get excited for the “Old Ozil” returning, but he never does. He always appears to have “injuries” and whenever he’s on the pitch, he walks around sluggish and destroys the tempo.

3. This hasn’t changed under Arteta

At the beginning of Mikel Arteta’s reign, he began to implement Ozil back into the starting XI on a consistent basis. However, it would appear he wasn’t happy with his performances, as week by week the former Germany international found it difficult to get a place in the team.

Arteta is a forward-thinking manager and he has a project that he wants to fulfil. He is not one for sentimentality or laurels, so he has no reason to keep Ozil if he feels like he’s not benefitting the squad in any way. This is the kind of ruthlessness that Arsenal have needed for some time now.
