3. Mount shows a champion’s mentality

A lot was said about the inexperience of this young Chelsea side and how that has cost them this season, so in a big game it was important to see who would step up for his team. Mount certainly did so on Sunday.

Not only did he score a dazzling free-kick, but he also set up Giroud for the second and contributed off the ball with his incredible work rate and tireless pressing, creating chances and winning the ball many times through his sheer will.

This is only his first season in the Premier League, having played last season in the Championship with Derby County, and watching him make that step up and seamlessly slot into this team was very impressive, as he will continue to be a valuable player.

He has talent, that has always been clear, but what he showed today was his heart. In a big game, the best players do what it takes to win, and that’s exactly what Mount did. He was the Man of the Match and justified Lampard’s faith in him.

While Chelsea’s most promising youngster Christian Pulisic faltered a bit, having just returned from injury, Mount was locked in from the start. He hardly put a foot wrong and did whatever he had to do to help his team, successfully.

He may be 20, but Mount seems to be mature beyond his years.
