After already signing Hakim Ziyech from Ajax at a reasonable price, Chelsea could return to the same club to solve their goalkeeper conundrum. Andre Onana could be the answer to Chelsea’s issues, and a rather cheap one too.

While the €30m valuation put off a few clubs, the Blues no doubt have that money and more available, and the price tag is completely warranted. The Cameroonian certainly has what it takes to make it in England, even if he lacks Premier League experience.

The only issue with this move is that there are many of the same concerns with Onana as there are with Kepa. They are both skilled on the ball with excellent reflexes, and they both have the same weakness: the failure to command their box.

Moving to the more aggressive and fast-paced league in England has taken its toll on Kepa, and it is possible that the same situation could happen with Onana. However, they are very different people so it is unlikely.

While Kepa was comfortably midtable in La Liga with Athletic Bilbao, Onana reached the Champions League semifinals and nearly won the treble with Ajax. The 24-year-old has been in those high-pressure situations and come out of them well, and Kepa hasn’t.

For instance, take the 4-4 draw between the two at Stamford Bridge earlier this year, a critical game for both. Onana conceded four goals, but two of those were Jorginho penalties, one was a tap-in, and the other an unstoppable volley.

He also saved the game with a sensational stop to deny Michy Batshuayi a late winner. On the other hand, Kepa conceded an own goal with a pathetic attempt to catch a Ziyech free-kick. There’s the difference between them; one has performed in big games, one hasn’t.

While Onana should not be Chelsea’s No. 1 option, he is definitely a solid, cheaper option to consider if the Oblak move doesn’t pan out.
