Names, names … and a few numbers, too

Cruz Azul will be looking to replace embattled team president Guillermo Álvarez who resigned his position after an arrest warrant was issued. “Billy” faces money laundering and fraud charges. In the meantime, general manager Jaime Ordiales will be making the big front-office decisions and the Cementeros are reportedly still in the market for another player or two to round out their roster.

Álvarez – whose whereabouts were unknown at the time this column was submitted – is due to report to district court and enter his plea on Friday.

Necaxa has the league’s longest losing streak – 4 – and they host América Friday. The Aguilas lead Liga MX with 6 goals scored while the Rayos have a -4 goal differential (0 goals scored, 4 goals allowed).

Necaxa’s former coach “Memo” Vázquez is also down on his luck as his Atlético de San Luis squad has gone 5 straight without a win (0-2-3 with 4 goals scored and 8 goals allowed).

The Chivas are the only Liga MX team without a goal this season after a second consecutive shut-out Sunday (a 2-0 loss at Santos, Guadalajara’s fifth straight loss to the Guerreros).

León was the last team to eliminate the “zero” from their goals scored column, beating Monterrey thanks to a spectacular 33-meter strike from skipper Luis Montes in minute 83. The 1-0 victory marks only the second time the Esmeraldas defeated the Rayados in their past 13 meetings. “La Fiera”  is also the only team that has yet to concede a goal during the Guardianes 2020.

Leaving the confines of Liga MX, Rafa Márquez was back in the news this week. The legendary El Tri skipper accepted a coaching job in Spain. “El Kaiser Michoacano” will guide RSD Alcalá’s Under-16 squad, his first professional coaching gig, a significant step in earning a UEFA manager’s license.
