It’s thought Arsenal have reached an “advanced” stage in negotiations.

Now that the transfer window is open, the Arsenal hierarchy will be hoping to make some moves. The statement released yesterday from the official website which announced the club will be making redundancies, fans would hope, should have no effect on their transfer plans.

The Gunners are being very prudent in their approach. Those who follow the news closely will see a clear pattern emerging; free or cheap options. Those include Willian, who is out of contract so will be available for free, and Philippe Coutinho, who has been offered to the Gunners by Barcelona.

According to a new report from Sport, the negotiations between Arsenal and Coutinho’s representatives are now at an “advanced” stage. It’s thought that Barcelona offered Coutinho to North London on the basis that they receive Matteo Guendouzi plus £9m in cash.

Coutinho is a midfield maestro and although things didn’t exactly work out for him during his loan at Bayern Munich, this is not indicative of his ability. Premier League fans know exactly what he has to offer, after he carried Liverpool for many seasons and in many ways was a key figurehead to their developmental stage. He certainly played Arsenal around on the pitch many times, that’s for sure.

Arsenal were in talks with Real Madrid to extend Dani Ceballos’ loan deal but it doesn’t look likely since Florentino Perez will want to cash in on him, the Gunners simply do not have the funds for that. If the Ceballos loan plea does fall through, they needn’t worry since they have been given a clear path to signing Coutinho.

Coutinho also means there is no room for Mesut Ozil. The two are similar players, but Coutinho is almost certainly at a much better place in his career than Ozil, who is simply a drain on resources. Selling him or terminating his contract is for the best.
