Chelsea have taken an unexpected turn in their defender quest.
If the end to Chelsea’s 2019/20 campaign has proven anything, it’s that Frank Lampard needs to fix his defence. It begs the question as to why they spent a lot on Timo Werner, but I’m certain his goals will prove those doubters wrong in the long run.
But now, Frank Lampard must be more prudent in his approach this transfer window. Funds are not infinite at the best of times, let alone with the Coronavirus pandemic. The good news is, though, the defensive market is one of the best in terms of picking up a deal.
According to a new report from the Daily Mirror, the Blues have turned their attention to John Stones, currently playing for Manchester City.

For the English defender though, playing is becoming more and more of a rarity, as he has only made 12 Premier League starts this season, and doesn’t look like an assured feature of Pep’s future plans. It’s thought that for this reason, he could be available for £20m, a great option for the Blues to have.
John Stones would be willing to make a move anywhere he can get game time. Bear in mind that Gareth Southgate will be selecting his Euro 2021 squad next season, and Stones will want to partner Harry Maguire.
One common feature of Lampard’s first season in charge is that he likes to deploy a young English core, shown through the likes of Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, Reece James, etc. John Stones, approaching the prime stages of his career, would be a great addition.
Stones has become one of the best in the league at playing the ball out from the back. As Chelsea’s goalkeeper situation remains uncertain for next season, this would add a level of confidence to the backline, and would certainly replace what they’ve been missing since selling David Luiz.
Do you think Chelsea will sign John Stones this summer?
