By signing Willian, Arsenal are showing there is no future for Mesut Ozil.

Arsenal fans have had a lot to keep up with in the transfer department over the last few days, but it’s certainly a nice problem to have. After lifting the FA Cup signified the end of their season, Mikel Arteta has not been resting at his laurels and by his own virtue, he has been hard at work.

It’s thought that they are now incredibly close to signing Willian, a free agent who has served his time at Chelsea. The Daily Mail have revealed that now, the Brazilian has undergone his medical and an announcement, therefore, would seemingly be imminent.

The most interesting news occured yesterday, though. I was intrigued to see that Mikel Arteta had his plans in mind with Willian, as he plans to play him through the centre of the attacking midfield. The news came from Metro, and it strikes me as a dig at Mesut Ozil.

Of course, Willian can certainly play in this position. While he has acclimatised to playing as a winger well, he has never been deluded to the fact that his favoured position is through the centre of midfield. He just had a much better chance of making it at Chelsea on the flank.

Willian is an excellent dribbler of the ball and he puts a lot of work in off the ball, too. This is an upgrade on Ozil, who tends to look sloppy and doesn’t really care about winning the ball back for his side. I am talking about the modern Ozil, of course, since he was once a great player.

Mesut Ozil has one year remaining on his contract and he seems determined to see out the remainder of it. Of course he would be, though, he’s on ridiculous wages for doing not much at all. If he honours finishing his llustrious career on a high, which is what he deserves, then he should do the Gunners a favour by moving away. I don’t see any way that Ozil will make the XI with Willian playing in his position, especially if Thomas Partey signs too.
