Chelsea must avoid the temptation of signing this easy option.
With the Coronavirus pandemic affecting the football world, it makes it much more tempting for clubs to chase the cheaper options. Especially Chelsea, who have already spent a large amount on bringing Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech to the club. However, given that the Blues were transfer banned last summer, they have all the more reason to be investing in their squad.
One position in particular which Frank Lampard would love to strengthen is the goalkeeper position, this is essentially chip paper news now. Kepa Arrizabalaga must be replaced because his attitude is not right for Lampard’s project, and Caballero is not good enough to make the starting XI.
Many supporters are calling for the club to sign Jan Oblak and while this may be ambitious, it’s clear to see why. Oblak is the best goalkeeper in the world and Chelsea would reap the rewards of signing him almost immediately.

This is why the recent news from The Sun has me perplexed. The English outlet claims that Chelsea are now targetting Ben Foster of Watford, a side that were related from the Premier League this season.
If Chelsea were looking to replace Cabellero, then absolutely Foster would be a good shout. However, he is 37 and Cabellero is 38. Sellng Kepa and having two essentially retired players in the squad is not what the Blues want. I understand that goalkeepers have a longer shelf-life than other positions but, come on, Lampard needs to be mounting a title challenge next season and noone will be taking him seriously with this calibre of goalkeepers.
The truth is, Chelsea need to sign Oblak. Or at the very least Andre Onana or Nick Pope. These three players are of the top quality and they are not deteriorating. While it may be financially more constraint to be chasing these players, it’s a risk the Blues simply must take. Foster would only stagnate their progress.
Do you think Chelsea should sign Ben Foster or not?
