Barcelona: Luis Suarez return to Ajax makes great sense for all parties
By Trent Nelson
Luis Suarez may be on the move after Barcelona’s thrashing to Bayern; Ajax for one, is interested
And why shouldn’t they be? Luis Suarez, although getting older, is still a capable number nine when put in the right position or league. Inter Miami is another club that has shown interest in signing the player, but Ajax presents some opportunities unavailable in America.
For Barcelona on the other hand, it is hardly a question unfortunately. After the crushing defeat to Bayern in the recent UCL quarterfinals, new talent and innovations must be brought to Catalonia, or else risk losing Messi and perennial competitiveness across Spain and Europe.
With this all understood, an Ajax move for Luis Suarez from Barcelona is firmly in the best interests of all three factions.
Luis Suarez: Once an Ajax man, always an Ajax man
For Luis Suarez, his brilliant career looks to be coming to a close, but it is not over yet to be certain; wherever he should play in the coming campaign, he will make an impact, as he always has. Should he do so in Amsterdam with Ajax, it will not be the first occurrence; the stakes would also be much higher than at an MLS club.
Suarez spent three and a half seasons with Ajax before moving to Liverpool in 2011; his 111 goals for the club is no small accomplishment, and it could grow still. Signing this Luis Suarez however, will be a bit different than signing the one from the late 2000’s.
The 33-year-old Suarez has gone on to have a prolific career at Liverpool and Barcelona in the years since he last played at Johan Cruyff Arena. Should he return to Ajax, what he can provide will go beyond simple statistical measurements.
He has the ability and intellect to aid Ajax in its domestic and European endeavors, as well as to assist in the growth of the academy products. While the academy at Ajax is often considered one of the best in Europe, having a player of Suarez’s stature and quality playing alongside some of the brightest of the young footballing talent of Europe does sound mouthwatering.
Meanwhile for Suarez, he will have the chance to continue to challenge for European footballing Supremacy with a club that less than two years ago was in the UCL Semifinals. There seem to be few reasons why Luis Suarez wouldn’t want to go back to Ajax; for Barcelona however, anywhere will likely do.
Barcelona: Desperate for money and change
Had Barcelona taken better care of the age and talent of their club in the years leading up to today, Luis Suarez might have a longer shelf life that’s he does today. But because of the lack of assistance to the aging Lionel Messi, as well as the need for capital in the midst of the worldwide economic downturn, almost the entire squad is up for sale.
And so for Barcelona, the best fit for any of their players is likely a matter of the highest bidder. Will Ajax pay more than Inter Miami? Is the level of competition a deal breaker for Suarez? Only time will tell, but in order for Barça to revive their European dreams in the near future, drastic moves will likely have to be made for new ambition and innovation within the club.
Hiring Ronald Koeman may be a start, but whoever the manager is will need the financial and public backing of the club itself. This includes the transfer market of course; with it being all hands on deck so to speak, a large turnover should likely be expected after the disgraceful performance against Die Roten.
For Luis Suarez, as well as Barcelona, no time seems better than the present to move on from one another; but will they?
Yes; Luis Suarez will be gone, one way or another
I think it’s possible to see some very large names leaving Catalonia, with Luis Suarez among them. Arturo Vidal could be sold to Inter Milan; Antoine Greizmann or Ousmane Dembele to PSG; Coutinho to Arsenal or Everton and so on. If not transfers for cash, then swaps like was seen with Juventus for Miralem Pjanic for Arthur Melo are entirely plausible as well.
With these departures, money will be generated, albeit likely less than was paid for these bigger names; names like Lautaro Martinez, Neymar Jr., Bernardo Silva and Matteo Guendouzi are all linked to Barcelona should the money be available to accommodate the proposals.
It is now or never for Barcelona, and that could benefit some of the aforementioned teams, as well as Ajax. While it is difficult to play with Lionel Messi at Barcelona, we have seen other talent leave and do well, like Thiago Alcantara for example.
In Luis Suarez, we do not have such a player; he plays well at every stop and should he move to Ajax, his impact will be seen across the club, from top to bottom. The same can be said with a move to Inter Miami of the MLS; for Suarez, it will be important to ask himself what type of challenge does he desire at this stage of his career. After all, only he truly knows this, and this alone is perhaps the largest determining factor of all.
