Chelsea need to up their negotiation game if they are to get this deal done.

Heading into the new EPL season, Chelsea fans are rightfully excited. Having already signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech, they stand on good stead to match or hopefully beat their top-four season they had this time out.

Let’s not forget, this was Frank Lampard‘s first season in charge and he wasn’t allowed to make changes to the squad.

The next box that looks likely to be ticked is the signing of Kai Havertz. Werner’s international teammate and ageing at 21 years old, he is one of the best young players in the world currently. He is a prolific talisman and Chelsea fans can essentially be assured of goals and assists if he signs.

However, the deal is not yet complete. In fact, it’s thought that the two clubs are yet to even agree on a fee. According to the Telegraph, there is an £18m difference in valuation between Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen which must be resolved before pen is put to paper.

Of course, this is not helped by the Coronavirus economic crisis. Chelsea will want to be prudent with their resources whereas Leverkusen, understandably, will want to make as much money on the sale as possible. After all, they have no real need to sell him so they won’t want to lower their asking price too much.

This leaves the ball in Chelsea court and it will be telling of how much they truly want to sign Havertz. If Lampard feels like he needs the German in his squad to complete his objectives for next season, then he should push the board to up their fee.

After all, the board would be more than willing to supply a helping hand. They are simply playing the long game, but that could end up costly.

Next. 4 signings Frank Lampard simply must make. dark
