Chelsea are keen on signing this Champions League finalist.

Frank Lampard has done a wonderful job of bolstering Chelsea’s attack this summer in the hope of returning to the top of the Premier League table. But, they still lack a solid backline, evident by their disastrous goal difference of just 15 in the 2019/20 campaign.

Chelsea has been linked with several defenders over the course of the last few months, from Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell to West Ham’s Declan Rice. However, they’ve yet to solidify a signing at the back with the upcoming season just under a month away.

The latest rumor, according to the Daily Telegraph, is linking the Blues with a move for PSG veteran defender Thiago Silva, whose contract is up with the Parisians. He would be able to join Chelsea for free, which could make this a very enticing possibility for Lampard’s side.

More from Chelsea FC

It’s no secret that Silva is past his prime, now at 35 years of age, and only having a few years of football left in him. But the former Brazilian international would bring a wealth of experience to Stamford Bridge. He’s a natural-born leader who’s guided PSG to numerous titles over the last eight years in Paris while possessing the type of defensive abilities that would be needed to succeed in England. Silva is a physical player who’s wonderful in aerial duels and he still has a decent set of legs on him when it comes to one-on-one situations.

The Blues are facing stiff competition for his signature though, with Serie A sides Fiorentina and AC Milan also vying for his services. Chelsea desperately needs to bring in a centre-back as time is running out to sign players. Silva brings an impressive resume to the table and could actually do very well in the Premier League.

Kai Havertz is still Chelsea’s number one transfer target as negotiations with Bayer Leverkusen for the youngster continue to develop. But, the Blues already have a wealth of attacking players who will create havoc in the final third. I’m not saying they should miss out on Havertz, but a defender must be a priority right now if they want to compete with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester City, with the latter also having their own issues at the back.

The Blues must make a move now and considering the price, Thiago Silva could be the answer to their defensive woes.
