Arsenal never have it easy when Manchester United are around.

There have been many infamous battles over the years between Arsenal and Manchester United, both on and off the pitch. While the on-field battles are always the most entertaining, it’s always interesting to see the two sides lock horns in the transfer window too.

Obviously, they are two of the biggest clubs in the world. Playing in the Premier League, many players from overseas wish to play for them. This oftentimes can lead to them pursuing the same player and it’s happened again just recently.

According to a new report from the Telegraph, when it seemed like Arsenal were imminently about to sign Gabriel Magalhaes, Manchester United made their interest known. Now, claim the Englsh outlet, Gabriel has paused his contract negotiations with Arsenal to give the Red Devils a chance to pitch themselves.

Does this mean that Arsenal should give up on the deal and look elsewhere? Absolutely not. The Brazilian defender is exactly what they’ve been looking for and he would be the perfect partner to William Saliba or David Luiz next season.

Gabriel is perfect for Mikel Arteta‘s philosophy. The Spanish manager likes his defenders to be spatially aware and track the movements of opposing attackers, rather than recklessly sliding in. This can be shown from the improvement of Shkodran Mustafi. Arteta wouldn’t have much work to do to integrate Gabriel into the starting XI since his strengths revolve around his footballing intelligence.

Manchester United do need to sign some defensive reinforcements given their frailties in this position since project restart, That said, it comes as no surprise to see them pursuing Magalhaes, who provides some of the best value for the money in this market. Still, this should not faze Arteta as he should have been expecting some competition.
