The reason why Chelsea’s pursuit of Ben Chilwell could be over

Chelsea may have to look elsewhere in summer.

Accepting defeat in the transfer window is never an easy thing to do. Chelsea have not had to do this yet, having signed some quality names already with Kai Havertz thought to be the next. However, the inevitable was soon to happen, as it looks likely that the pursuit of Ben Chilwell will soon collapse.

A new report from The Sun claims that Chilwell will need to see an injury specialist over the heel injury in which he is currently nursing. The English outlet predicts this will affect his deal with Chelsea as, obviously, he would not pass the medical and Chelsea wouldn’t want to sign an injured player anyway.

Of course, the good news for Chelsea fans is that there are a number of alternatives to Chilwell anyway. He is a great option, of course, but this doesn’t mean he is the only option. Just recently, the Blues were linked with a move for Sergio Reguilon, so this is an avenue for Lampard to explore instead.

Chelsea won’t just leave this as a failure, of course. The consensus seems to be that they need to sign a full-back this summer, with Marcos Alonso on his way out and their current options not being adequate enough.

As Frank Lampard pushes for silverware next season, which he failed to do in his first year in charge, he will want the squad to be complete to his standards. Of course, he wasn’t able to make signings last summer, hence his desire to add personal touches to the squad this summer.

Chilwell was an expensive option. While his quality did justify his price, you cannot say that him being young and English didn’t add to his value. Promising homegrown players tend to be ridiculously expensive when players from overseas that are just as good if not better have a lower asking price.

Who do you think Chelsea will sign instead of Chilwell?
