Chelsea fans can get excited now.

Those who follow the transfer news closely will know that Chelsea are performing a masterclass in the transfer window currently. They are the biggest spenders, but at the same time, they are being prudent with their resources.

This is why it will come as great news to Chelsea that they are nearing a free transfer. That’s right, according to Sky Sports, a date has been set for Thiago Silva to complete (and hopefully pass) his medical. The English outlet claims that fans can expect a progression on this transfer by Thursday.

Thiago Silva is one of the greatest centre-backs of all time and certainly one of the best in the game currently. He ages at 35 years old which is not ideal, but there is still fuel left in the tank. Besides, this is not anywhere near retirement age for defenders, since players of his style tend to age like a fine wine.

Frank Lampard has a youthful squad, which is amazing. However, inexperience can often cost the side. This was shown in the recent FA Cup final against Arsenal and indeed as they bode farewell to the UCL at the hands of Bayern Munich.

That said, it will be nice to provide some balance. After all, Thiago Silva has plenty of experience, most of which at the top level. He has performed on the big stage for both club and country, so he certainly has a thing or two to teach the younger Blues.

Chelsea’s defence has oftentimes been called into question this season, most notably after project restart, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen, while very good on the most part, have shown many signs of inconsistency, with the likes of Kurt Zouma not providing sufficient backup. That said, Chelsea are certainly strengthening in the right position.
