Arsenal have overtaken Chelsea in the race to sign Philippe Coutinho.

Arsenal and Chelsea have had many known battles over the years, but not just on the pitch. They are similar clubs with similar goals, therefore their transfer strategies often can overlap. Just recently, the likes of Olivier Giroud, David Luiz and Willian have moved between the two clubs.

Chelsea are having a monumental transfer window this summer, securing three top quality transfers already. That said, it’s no surprise that they are hungry for more. However, it would appear that Arsenal have the edge over them when it comes to Philippe Coutinho.

That’s right, according to Don Balon, Arsenal are in pole position to sign Philippe Coutinho this summer. It’s thought that new manager Ronald Koeman will have a reshuffle of his squad, with many top players going to be axed (we all know what’s happening with Messi, after all).

Coutinho is not in the future plans for Barcelona, whether it be Koeman or another manager at the helm. That’s why he is open to a move away back to the Premier League, a competition which served him well during his days with Liverpool. While I don’t believe in this “EPL proven” nonsense, it’s certainly an attractive reason for Arsenal to sign him.

Coutinho is an attacking midfielder with an abundance of flair and he is able to create. So in many ways, he is similar to Dani Ceballos who spent the last season on loan at the Emirates Stadium. Of course, Mikel Arteta seems adamant to sign Ceballos but this may not be possible depending on Real Madrid’s stance, either way, Coutinho is certainly not a bad backup option.

Under Mikel Arteta’s project, in which he has won the FA Cup and the Community Shield over the last month, Philippe Coutinho will surely shine. It’ll be great to see him back in the EPL.
