The Chelsea board must seriously consider if he’s worth it.

Those who are close followers of the transfer news will know that one thing is no secret; Chelsea are the big spenders this summer. It comes as no surprise either, even given the Coronavirus economic complications. The Blues were not able to make signings last summer, so they are avenging that this summer.

However, one position which is yet to be resolved is that between the sticks. It’s obvious that this needs to be resolved since Frank Lampard is just another that has failed to get on with Kepa Arrizabalaga, as there is a clear power struggle here (it was the same with Maurizio Sarri, so it’s no fault of Lampard’s).

When a player is this detrimental to the locker room, the best thing to do is simply replace him. Luckily for Chelsea, there are plenty of options out there to do so, with the likes of Jan Oblak and Gianluigi Donnarumma springing to mind.

However, Chelsea are also considering the cheaper options, since it’s important to be prudent in these unprecedented times. I know, I said that word, please don’t think any less of me for it.

Well, the Blues thought they had stumbled upon a gem in the French Ligue 1, as they enquired about the signing of Rennes goalkeeper Edouard Mendy. That said, according to the Telegraph, the Blues have been informed that they must prepare to pay at least £30m if they are to sign Mendy.

This is by no means an extortionate price, especially given the inflated climate of the current market. However, for a goalkeeper, there are certainly better options for that same price.

The Chelsea board must not throw cash around like it’s nothing. I understand it’s easy to do so, but if they complete the signing of Kai Havertz then they are entering dangerous territory with their resources, so now is the time to stop and think.

Is Mendy really worth this amount?
