Well, I think Arsenal’s stance is very clear.

Arsenal have had a stellar transfer window so far but they are not looking to stop anytime soon, and rightly so given the fans are loving it. They have announced the signings of Cedric Soares, Pablo Mari, Willian, Gabriel Magalhaes and the loan extension of Dani Ceballos so far.

But it’s well known that Mikel Arteta will still be in the market for more midfield options, despite Willan and Ceballos being signed. Philippe Coutinho’s name often floats around the media but a name that has been consistent throughout the last number of months is Thomas Partey of Atletico Madrid.

The Ghanaian international is available to the Gunners for his release clause, which is thought to be at the £45m mark. Given the economic implications of the Coronavirus pandemic, Arsenal have understandably been trying alternative methods to convince Atletico.

However, the Spanish club remains insistent that they want the full cash sum. This was even after, according to the Mirror, Arsenal offered not one but two first-team stars for his services; Alexandre Lacazette and Matteo Guendouzi.

I feel two emotions after hearing this news. One is sheer delight that Atletico didn’t accept this offer, because these two players combined are worth much more than £45m, which also makes me very confused as to why Atletico would turn this down, given a direct replacement for Partey in Guendouzi and a player they have been interested in for many years, Lacazette.

Still, I suppose money is the main objective for every club at the moment, as they bid to strengthen their squad with limited resources. Arsenal can only expect this, but the £45m is worth paying, to say the least. Partey is a creative midfielder whose strengths revolve around his progressive passing, so he would be a great addition to Arteta’s project.
