#2 Timo Werner – €53 million (RB Leipzig to Chelsea, 2020)

In the top two most expensive German players we have Chelsea’s latest pair of recruits, with Werner in second.

Billed as one of the most exciting young attacking stars, the 24-year old’s devastating finishing, and a peerless scoring rate has drawn him the comparisons of German legend, Miroslav Klose.

He was signed from VfB Stuttgart in 2016 for a then club-record fee of €10 million, and in the next four years, more than justified his outlay, leading RB Leipzig’s vanguard with aplomb and even helping them qualify for the Champions League for the very first time in 2017.

Werner left in July this year after scoring 95 goals from 135 games, capping off his best year in the 2019/20 season by netting 34 times in all competitions.

#1 Kai Havertz – €80 million (Bayer Leverkusen to Chelsea, 2020)

Closely following in the footsteps of Werner to the Stamford Bridge, Havertz was the latest in the series of marquee signings by Chelsea, costing a whopping €80 million. And for good reason.

He might be just 21, but the player comes with bags of talent. Technically gifted and an accurate passer of the ball, the twinkle-toed midfielder was the creative chieftain for his side last season.

His ability to pick out teammates with a long ball helps instigate attacks out of nowhere, while his strength and confidence on the ball make him hard to be dispossessed too.

Havertz’s eye for goals though is already legendary. In the 2018/19 season, he was the best scoring midfielder in all of Europe’s top five leagues with 17 goals in the Bundesliga and followed up the exceptional numbers with another 12 last season.
