Mid-table Liga MX teams vying for playoff spots

The top five Liga MX teams up next should all make the Liguilla and either of the Monterrey teams have legitimate aspirations to fight for a first-round bye. Even No. 10 Santos could be considered a postseason lock by virtue of having Guillermo Almada at the helm.

5. Tigres (+3)

4-5-2, 17 points, 17 GF, 11 GA

Hitting their stride at the right time with crosstown rivals Monterrey up next on the schedule. The Tigres appear much more confident with goalie Nahuel Guzmán entrenched between the pipes after he missed a month with the coronavirus.

6. Monterrey (—)

4-5-2, 17 points, 17 GF, 13 GA

The Rayados have so much talent and so little effectiveness. A 2-1 win over cellar-dwelling Atlético de San Luis will not give fans much confidence heading into the Clásico Regiomontano.

7. Pachuca (-2)

5-3-3, 18 points, 13 GF, 10 GA

The Tuzos are still learning about themselves after a bigger-than-usual roster overhaul. Coach Paulo Pezzolano needs to figure out his strike force as Pachuca has just two goals in its past three games.

8. Querétaro (–1)

3-2-6, 11 points, 16 GF, 17 GA

Another hard-luck loss after a silly foul reduced them to 10 men against the Tigres. On the positive side, the Gallos have an easy schedule from here on out.

9. Guadalajara (—)

4-3-4, 15 points, 10 GF, 9 GA

The Chivas are not living up to their preseason headlines. Striker J.J. Macías can’t get untracked and midfielder Fernando Beltrán can’t get healthy.

10. Santos (+2)

3-3-5, 12 points, 12 GF, 16 GA

Have the Guerreros finally found their replacement for Brian Lozano (out with a season-ending knee injury)? Walter Sandoval sparked Santos to a critical 2-1 win at Toluca.

11. FC Juárez (–1)

3-4-3, 13 points, 9 GF, 10 GA

The Bravos did not play this weekend after their game with Tijuana was canceled after 30 members of the Xolos organization tested positive for Covid-19.

11. Puebla (–1)

4-1-6, 13 points, 15 GF, 15 GA

The Camoteros parked the bus after scoring 40 minutes into their match against Necaxa. Three points is important, but a game against the worst team in Liga MX should have been an opportunity to develop some offensive momentum.
