These three teams appear out of the running

16. Tijuana (–3)

The Xolos continue to stink things up, failing to look very competitive in their 2-0 loss at Toluca. It would seem that the only way coach Pablo Guede can save his job is to overturn the 1-0 first-leg deficit against Monterrey in the Copa MX Final. Even that might not be enough though.

17. Querétaro (–2)

The Gallos Blancos have the lowest payroll in Liga MX yet drew praise early on in the Guardianes 2020 with stunning upsets of Cruz Azul and América. But as the club failed to continue overachieving (they are on a 0-2-5 streak), coach Alex Diego got the axe this week. Héctor Altamirano was tapped to finish out the season.

18. Atlético San Luis (—)

The Tuneros have a -13 goal differential (tied with Tijuana for worst in Liga MX) and a league-worst 10 losses, but management announced that coach Guillermo Vázquez will keep his job. It seems likely they’d rather keep “Memo” than pay his hefty severance package.

Liga MX Golden Boot race

Jonathan Rodríguez’s brace against the Chivas moved the Cruz Azul striker two goals clear of Tigres’ ace André-Pierre Gignac in the race for the Liga MX goal-scoring crown with two games remaining.

Rodríguez’s 12 goals is the most in a single season for a Cruz Azul player since Emanuel Villa scored 17 in the Apertura 2009, surpassing the 11 goals scored by teammate Milton Caraglia three seasons ago.

Turmoil on the ‘Goat Farm’

The Chivas have struggled to score this season and star striker J.J. Macías has come up wanting, too. Macías has just 5 goals and Guadalajara has been blanked 8 times in 15 games

Some observers wondered how the young forward would do after management declined offers from teams in Europe over the summer, denying the 21-year-old the transfer abroad he so desperately wanted. And he did himself no favors by criticizing team management in a feature article in GQ this month.

Now, there is talk he could be benched this weekend (for poor form or for speaking out?) and one wonders where the youngster’s head is and whether he can rediscover his form – and his commitment – in time to help the Chivas in the playoffs.
