The Arsenal defender isn’t keeping the supporters in the dark.

One thing that can be said about Arsenal, particularly in recent seasons, is that they have a tendency to leave supporters in the dark about their contract situations. Just taking a look at examples in Alexis Sanchez and Aaron Ramsey provides concrete proof as to how fatal this can be to the club.

However, Shkodran Mustafi has taken initiative to inform the supporters of his current contract situation, given his current deal at the Emirates Stadium runs out in the summer. The Germany international has claimed that he’s yet to enter talks with the Arsenal officials, according to Evening Standard.

I must put this out there, this is by no means disastrous. Yes, Mustafi has turned into an important squad player and there’s no denying his performances have improved drastically under Mikel Arteta. However, the favoured defensive partnership seems to be Gabriel and David Luiz at the back; this serves the Gunners best.

Do I think Arsenal should keep Mustafi? Well, this depends. I think the club should seriously consider their chances of signing a defender in the January or summer transfer window, and if they feel like they can, then selling him in January would be best.

However, it would not be the end of the world should Arteta wish to keep Mustafi. He is only 28 years old which means he is entering the prime stage of his career as a centre half, which shows given his improvement under Arteta. While he may not have had the best Arsenal career so far, he is a World Cup winner and he will only continue to improve given his surroundings.

So, fans needn’t worry. There are, of course, other contract situations to sort out at Emirates Stadium. But these will be sorted in due time.
