Chelsea aren’t looking to alter their plans too much this January.

You win some, you lose some. While Chelsea may have made many wins in the summer by signing some top-quality players, they also suffered their fair share of losses. None more so than Declan Rice, who the Blues were eagerly chasing in the summer from West Ham United.

In the end, Frank Lampard was not able to sign his countryman. Perhaps this was due to financial constraints, which is understandable given the vast amount that Chelsea spent this summer, in an uncertain economy I must add.

But, this will not mean that Chelsea accept defeat, as they very rarely do. It’s been revealed by the Football Insider that Chelsea will look to be in contact with West Ham again in January over the signing of Declan Rice.

More from Chelsea FC

You can understand Lampard’s persistence to sign Rice. He is a talented Englishman, one of the best young players in England at the moment. His immense versatility and maturity on the ball make him one of the most underrated players in the Premier League, as he can play both as a defender and a midfielder, not looking out of place in either position.

This is exactly what Chelsea need going forward. In all honesty, Frank Lampard is yet to decipher his best XI and this includes both the defence and midfield; therefore the signing of Declan Rice couldn’t come at a better time.

Obviously, though, something Chelsea learned in the summer is that Rice isn’t going to be cheap. If the board choose to invest in him, then Rice will need to prove he can benefit the side. Judging from how he’s played with the Hammers over the last few seasons, this won’t take much convincing.

Next. Scoring won't be the issue for Chelsea this year. dark
