Manchester United and Liverpool are chasing the same player…

Manchester United and Liverpool have had many infamous coming togethers over the last number of decades. I am of course referring to the on-field battles, but the two can often rival each other in the transfer market too, this has been a common theme.

It’s no change to this day, even with Liverpool in a significantly better position than their Manchester counterparts. Even in the summer, the two sides were known to be interested in signing Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund.

According to a report from the Mirror, though, the two sides are both expressing an interest in signing Dayot Upamecano from Red Bull Leipzig. It’s thought they’ve been given a boost too, since Bayern Munich cannot afford to sign him and he is still contemplating his future.

More from Manchester United

At this point in time, Liverpool need to sign him much more than Manchester United do. The Reds have their obvious defensive shortcomings this year, with Virgil van Dijk set to be out for some time due to the injury he picked up against Everton.

Although, Manchester United are understandably keen to fix their back-line too. While Harry Maguire has somewhat picked up form of late, he is known to be a liability and the players around him aren’t exactly top-calibre either. He would immensely benefit from the club signing a top-quality partner for him.

Of course, there is bound to be interest from other clubs too. Upamecano was one of the most in-demand centre-backs in the summer and this interest will not have died out. I would assume that Arsenal will put in less of a fight to sign him now they have a good defensive philosophy, but I wouldn’t put it past Mikel Arteta to try.

Next. Manchester United still want to sign England starlet. dark

Where do you think will be Dayot Upamecano’s next destination?
