‘El Comandante’ to get a change of scenery
Atlético de San Luis thought it had made a deal over the summer that would help them battle for a playoff spot. With much fanfare, the Tuneros acquired former Liga MX scoring champ Mauro Quiroga from Necaxa.
“El Comandante” won the Apertura 2019 Golden Boot with 12 goals and added another 5 in the Clausura 2020 before it was cut short after 10 games. But things did not go well in San Luis and the Tuneros finished in last place while Quiroga never settled in with his new club, looking frustrated most of the time and finding the net only twice.
Quiroga was traded to Pachuca last week where he’ll team up with fellow Necaxa alum Víctor Dávila. In return, the Tuneros de San Luis get burly striker Leonardo Ramos who rarely managed to get off the Tuzos bench. Since bursting onto the Liga MX scene with Lobos BUAP, scoring in each of his first six games. Injuries have slowed his productivity since then, as he bounced around from León to Pachuca.
Mazatlán fans got good news this past week as striker Camilo Sanvezzo announced he had changed his mind and would re-sign with the Sinaloa club. The Brazilian poacher had a handshake agreement with a Malaysian club.
Sanvezzo joined the team from Tijuana after the season had already started and he never found favor with coach Palencia. After Tomás Boy took over with four games remaining, Sanvezzo became the featured striker and he responded with goals. Camilo scored twice in Boy’s debut (a 3-2 victory over FC Juárez). Sanvezzo scored again in the 2-1 loss to Monterrey, then recorded a first-half hat trick to inspire Mazatlán to a 5-0 road win at Atlético de San Luis.
Playing for Boy obviously appealed to Sanvezzo and he reneged on his promise with the Malaysian team and re-upped with The Lighthouse Squad.
Elsewhere, the Pumas are bracing for some turnover. Fullback Alan Mozo is reportedly a target for the Chivas while the Tigres are sniffing around in search of a striker. Evidently both of UNAM’s forwards – Juan Ignacio Dinenno and Carlos González – are on the Tigres’ wish list.
The Tigres are shopping for help upfront since Edu Vargas is taking his skills to Atlético Mineiro. The Chile international is finally making the long-rumored move to Brazil (his wife is Brazilian) where he’ll be reunited with Jorge Sampaoli, his former boss at Team Chile.
