Arsenal: The one player Mesut Ozil would have benefitted this season

This season has been one of “what ifs” for Arsenal.

Arsenal are not in a good place right now. They find themselves falling further and fruther adrift of their rivals, and it was telling when they were outplayed by Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend. Mikel Arteta has to turn things round.

But the Spaniard, no matter how much he backs his own decisions, will look back at a decision he made with regret. Arsenal decided to leave Mesut Ozil out of this season’s squad, completely out=casting the Germany international. This divided fanbase, with myself taking the stance that this was the right decision to make.

However, as the weeks go on, I am starting to miss having Ozil in the squad more and more. I can’t help but feel like his creative exploits would benefit the attacking line, no one more than Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Auba is a clinical striker and when he is on form, he is one of the best in the world. This has been proven time and time again, but not this season and espcially not since he signed the contract. But what is the difference between this season and last season? Well, the creativity is lacking.

I can’t help but feel like this has been influenced by Ozil’s exclusion. Although he rarely featured last season, whenever he did play, Arsenal looked all the better for it. I was the first to criticise him for the ethic he put in considering the amount he earns, but I can never fault his class on the ball.

Playing with Ozil more, in hindsight, would have helped Auba build on the immense tally he displayed last season. All it required was Ozil swallowing his pride and Arteta being more patient in tutoring the player that is clearly lacking in confidence.
