Chelsea: 3 potential managers that could replace Frank Lampard
By David Glancy
Erik ten Hag
With the exception of two years in charge of Bayern Munich II, Ajax manager Erik ten Hag has spent all of his 23 years playing and managing career in the Netherlands. Ten Hag has most notably served as the Ajax boss, taking over the Dutch giants in 2017. Ajax reclaimed the Eredivisie title in 2019 in a year in which Ten Hag’s side made a memorable Champions League run before being knocked out by Spurs in the semi-finals.
At 50, ten Hag has reached the pinnacle of Dutch football with the only remaining target being Champions League success. After the departures of Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt along with Hakim Ziyech and Donny Van de Beek in the most recent window, is unlikely to once again surpass Real Madrid and Juventus in the continental competition.
Ten Hag was rumored to take over at Bayern Munich but has since remained in the Netherlands. Ten Hag brings the experience of promoting and developing youth players into global stars and is partly responsible for the recent rise in expectations of the national team. He has been groomed under Guardiola while with Bayern and could bring the Cruyff-like mentality to London which has been passed from Cruyff to Guardiola to Ten Hag.
Ten Hag’s experience of domestic success, player development, and style of play all make him an enticing option and ideal fit for both the style of play Abramovich requires and the already existing talent in the starting line-up and reserves. It remains uncertain both if and when Erik ten Hag would depart Ajax, but the finances and depth at Chelsea could make a move an ideal fit for both sides if Chelsea exercises a plan to move on from Lampard.
