Chelsea could break transfer record but this time it’ll be worth it

Chelsea want to update their fortunes list.

When you look at Chelsea’s top three most expensive players of all time, the list doesn’t strike you as anywhere near impressive. Kai Havertz, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Alvaro Morata are all performing/performed below standards during their time at Stamford Bridge.

While there is still time for Havertz to justify his price tag since he has only been at the club a few months, he may have his transfer record broken.

At least this would relieve him of some pressure, I suppose. The English media are like hound dogs when it comes to a foreign player that cost more than £50m; it’s almost as if they’re held to such a high standard that they aren’t allowed to show their human beings on some occasions.

Anyway, I digress. The Athletic have claimed that Chelsea are wanting to break their club transfer record by signing Erling Haaland. The Norway international is likely to be held at a high asking price from Borussia Dortmund, given his release clause doesn’t become active until 2022.

Haaland isn’t your conventional striker. The 20-year-old first burst onto the scene in the Champions League where his relentless scoring caught the attention of many clubs in Europe, but Dortmund were the lucky side to receive his signature.

Since joining the Signal Iduna Park, Haaland has not stopped scoring. A variety of different goals makes him already one of the most complete strikers in European football; a bold claim to make at the ripe age of 20, I know.

If Chelsea were to sign Haaland, they would genuinely be title contenders. Havertz and Werner were always going to be hit or miss; as  neutral fan, this was always very easy to see, despite Chelsea fans’ claims they would be world beaters. Haaland, on the other hand, is only going to get better.

Do you think Chelsea should sign Erling Haaland?
