USWNT’s Mewis sisters put on a show against Colombia
What’s better than two sisters and best friends playing together for their country? Scoring 4 out of 4 goals for their country in the USWNT’s first game of 2021. The USWNT faced off against Colombia on Monday in an international friendly that saw them taking home their first win of the year.
There was plenty to celebrate about Monday night including Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd’s first competitive game in nearly a year, Becky Sauerbrunn’s first game as the official team captain, and Catarina Macario’s debut for the USWNT, however it was the Mewis sisters who would headline the night.
Sam Mewis kicked off the scoring in the 4th minute calmly finishing a Megan Rapinoe cross. She followed that up with a header goal in the 33rd minute and inflicted further damage in the first minute of the second half sending home a beautifully taken PK. The 6 foot tall Tower of Power was in excellent form and collected her first ever hat trick for the national team.

Kristie Mewis subbed in for Lindsey Horan in the 64th minute as Sam Mewis was subbed out for Rose Lavelle. Though the sisters never shared the field together on Monday, they shared in the scoring and took turns cheering each other on. Kristie Mewis scored the game’s fourth and final goal in the 85th minute finishing a cross from Carli Lloyd.
As the #1 ranked team in the world, the USWNT was always expected to dominate Monday’s game. In fact, Colombia, who is currently ranked #26 in the world, was fortunate to come away from the game only 4 goals down when the US could have easily put away another handful more.
While the USWNT can afford to clean up some aspects of their play before they face more challenging competition in the SheBelieves Cup next month, the game was an encouraging return to play for the team and certainly reinforced the Mewis sisters’ integral role in the team’s success going forward.
