Having started their January transfer business, Arsenal are not done yet. It looks likely that they will sign Martin Odegaard on loan from Real Madrid, after announcing the signing of Mat Ryan from Brighton and Hove Albion on loan.

According to a new report from Express, the Gunners want to sign a backup to Kieran Tierney before this month’s transfer window comes to a close.

The Scotland international has turned into one of the most important players under Mikel Arteta and he is significant to the rebuild that the Spaniard is undergoing at the club. His tenacity and his leadership qualities would surely make him next in line for captaincy.

But there is one problem with Tierney, from an unbias perspective. You cannot deny that his injury record makes him a liability and with no real backup, Arsenal need to make sure they are more prudent in their approach this transfer window.

With that being said, I welcome the idea of signing another left-back. While Bukayo Saka is more than capable of playing in this position, there is no denying that he would rather play in the frontline for this is where he looks the most productive.

Of course, the Gunners still own the rights to Sead Kolasinac given he is only on loan at Schalke 04. However, I don’t think his name should be mentioned in this equation. He is not good enough for the aims that Arteta has in mind at Arsenal and removing the deadwood from the squad is something the Spaniard prioritises during his rebuild.

Tierney would relish with some healthy competition in his stride. I think he knows deep down that his position in the Arsenal XI on a regular basis is safe, but he would much appreciate some company and another player to learn from in the Arsenal camp.
