I know, I know. The title is rather ironic given that the Gunners just bode farewell to the FA Cup at the hands of Southampton, but we’ll look past that. The transfer news is looking rather positive for Arsenal, even if some of their performances lately have been negative.

It was revealed yesterday that Arsenal had plans to sign a backup to their talented full-back Kieran Tierney, but they had no real direction in terms of which players they were looking to sign. This has all changed.

According to a report from the Evening Standard, the Gunners are yet again considering the signing of Ryan Bertrand from Southampton. The 31-year-old may be getting on a bit now, but he would still serve as a valuable short-term backup option to Tierney.

In many ways, the Englishman and the Scotsman are very alike in their styles of play. Bertrand is also an avid crosser of the ball and he would be able to play some amazing balls into the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. This would benefit Arteta as he looks to improve the creativity in many areas of the pitch.

Bertrand is also very good at defending and he takes after the former Nacho Monreal in terms of his ability to make probing challenges in the opposing half, which helps his side form some valuable counter attacks. This could be why Arteta is leaning to sign Bertrand, because he knows the value of playing alongside a player with this ability.

The aims for Arsenal are to provide competition to Kieran Tierney, not replace him. They don’t need to replace him for he is one of their best performers lately and will only continue to be. But with Sead Kolasinac out on loan, it’ll be good for the Gunners to have sufficient backup because Tierney is known to be injury prone.
