Liga MX Road Warriors top Power Rankings
Northern clubs predominate in Top 10
3. Santos
Record: 4-3-1 15 points
The Guerreros looked like world beaters for a little over an hour, but then had to sweat out the final 10 minutes after nearly blowing a 3-goal lead. Still, the “Laguneros” are 4-1-0 at home.
4. Toluca
Record: 4-2-2 14 points
The Diablos had been perfect at home (4-0-0) until they failed to put away Atlas at La Bombonera, settling for a tie. “Los choriceros” sat atop the Liga MX table after Matchday 6 but have stumbled since.
5. Puebla
Record: 3-3-2 12 points
The Camoteros continue to impress with a pesky attack and a solid defense. The modest club boasts the second-stingiest defense behind Monterrey, conceding only 4 goals in eight games. However, starting keeper Antony Silva tweaked a knee in the win over Necaxa and he might miss Tuesday’s contest against León.
6. Monterrey
Record: 3-3-1 12 points
The Rayados are still paying the price for the Covid outbreak that interrupted their season way back before Matchday 3. Coach Javier Aguirre’s side is winless in its past three after an undefeated start.
7. (tie) Tijuana
Record: 3-4-1 13 points
The Xolos were unbeaten through six weeks but have not won since. Coach Pablo Guede has watched his team give up as many goals in the past two games (4) as they did in the previous six.
7. (tie) Tigres
Record: 3-2-2 11 points
The Tigres must shake the habit of conceding late goals or risk the wrath of curmudgeonly coach “Tuca” Ferretti. “El Diente” López appears to have forced himself into the starting line-up, scoring a brace for the second game in a row.
9. Atlético de San Luis
Record: 3-2-3 11 points
The Tuneros have never beaten the Tigres, but when Nicolás Ibáñez snared a late equalizer Thursday night, it sure tasted like victory. Coach Leonel Rocco has this team playing rugged football.
10. Guadalajara
Record: 2-4-2 10 points
Are the Chivas finally putting it together? Alejandro Mayorga is providing great two-way pay at his left back position and striker J.J. Macías has scored in five of his past six games. Now coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich must plug some holes at the back where self-inflicted errors are responsible for most of the 12 goals the club has conceded.
