Cementeros-Rayados is potential Finals preview

League-leading Cruz Azul puts its 8-game win streak on the line when Monterrey pays a visit to Estadio Azteca. The Rayados have the disadvantage of a midweek make-up game against León, but striker Rogelio Funes Mori is the hottest scorer in Liga MX right now.

The Argentine forward scored twice in consecutive games last week, but his elation was tempered by a scary incident on Sunday: he and his family were robbed at gunpoint while in their own home. Funes Mori showed no ill-effects from the trauma, netting the equalizer in the Rayados’ hard-fought 1-1 draw vs León on Wednesday.

The Cementeros, meanwhile, kept their win streak alive with an injury time penalty conversion to defeat UNAM 1-0. The Liga MX leaders have not lost since Jan. 16 and have outscored their opponents 15-3 during the current streak. No doubt, they’ll pay special attention to Funes Mori on Saturday night.

Elsewhere, sixth-place Puebla hosts red-hot Atlas in the opening game of Matchday 11 on Friday night. The host Camoteros have gone 3-2-0 since losing to América on Feb. 6. Atlas, meanwhile, is on a 7-game unbeaten run (4-3-0), a streak kept alive by the Liga MX rules committee handing the Zorros a 3-0 win over América for the aforementioned clerical error.

Two other games of note feature the reigning Liga MX champ and the runners-up. On Friday night, losing finalist UNAM visits FC Juárez in desperate need of a win. The Pumas are in 14th place and are winless on the road.

On Monday night, holders León are facing the ignominy of not being able to defend their Liga MX crown unless they stop the free-fall. “La Fiera” is in 15th place with only 2 wins through 10 games. Fortunately, the Esmeraldas host last-place Necaxa.
