Liga MX Power Rankings: América claims top spot
What are Liga MX powerhouses doing down here?
11. Tigres (–3)
Record: 3-3-4 12 points
This team has been notorious for getting off to slow starts in recent years before finding its stride down the stretch. But this season, the Tigres appear to be going through the motions and coach “Tuca” Ferretti’s reluctance to go to his bench could be the club’s downfall.
12. Atlético de San Luis (–1)
Record: 3-3-5 12 points
The Tuneros are winless in March after a strong February finish (2-2-0) and they have not looked truly competitive over the course of 90 minutes in any of the three games thus far this month.
13. León (+1)
Record: 3-2-6 11 points
The champs are back! Well, not so fast. Their first win since Feb. 21 ended a shocking 0-1-3 stretch, but it came against last-place Necaxa, a team they have now beaten six straight times. Still, the return from injury of offensive mastermind Luis Montes made a world of difference as evidenced by the Esmeraldas dominant possession advantage (70%).
14. Pachuca (+3)
Record: 2-4-5 10 points
Break up the Tuzos! After going winless in the first 9 games of the season, Pachuca is on a 2-game win streak, saving coach Paulo Pezzolano’s job in the process. No time to rest on their laurels, however, as the wounded Tigres will be coming to Estadio Hidalgo on Thursday night.
15. Chivas (–6)
Record: 2-6-3 12 points
What a disaster! “El Rebaño Sagrado” were embarrassed at home by their biggest rivals and fans are clamoring for the heads of coach Víctor Manuel Vucetich and GM Ricardo Peláez. The Chivas must stew in their mediocrity for three weeks as Liga MX officials postponed their next game since six of their players have been summoned to El Tri for the Olympic qualifiers.
16. UNAM (–1)
Record: 2-3-6 9 points
The Pumas salvaged a tie against FC Juárez and continue to look nothing like the team that reached the Liga MX Finals last season. The midfield is in disarray and left back Jero Rodríguez is coming up short in his task of replacing the departed Alejandro Mayorga.
17. FC Juárez (–1)
Record: 2-3-5 9 points
The Bravos suspended playmaker Marco Fabián for a night on the town continued their downward spiral, a tumble that cost coach Luis Fernando Tena his job. The team has given up 17 goals in the past 6 games while only scoring 5 times. Not good.
18. Necaxa (—)
Record: 1-4-6 7 points
The Rayos’ lone win came back on Jan. 15 and their record could be much worse if not for goalie Luis Malagón. “Los Hidrocálidos” do host FC Juárez this weekend but they’ll do so without Malagón who will likely be in goal for Mexico’s Olympic qualifying team.
