Sergi Roberto’s Barcelona future in doubt
The writing may be on the wall for the versatile Barcelona midfielder.
Sergi Roberto was one of the players singled out following Barcelona’s 2-1 loss to Granada as some felt he should have done a better job at defending. Especially in the second goal where the cross came from his side.
In such an important game, many were left wondering why manager Ronald Koeman opted for the 29-year-old instead of Sergiño Dest.

Roberto came into the season as the first-choice right-back. Two separate, lengthy injuries have plagued his season and in the process, he’s seen his spot taken over by the aforementioned Dest. He’s also well behind in the pecking order in midfield.
Given all that, it would come as no surprise if he starts to consider a possible move away. Even more so if his spot at the club is no longer secure.
According to Diario AS, his future at Barcelona is now in doubt. The emergence of Ilaix Moriba in midfield means that Roberto’s versatility, his biggest strength, has become almost worthless.
The fact of the matter is there are players in his positions that are better than him.
In Koeman’s 3-5-2 system, Dest is better equipped in the right wingback position as his strength is going forward. He’s quick, can dribble and is simply more adept offensively.
His performance against Granada left much to be desired as his deficiencies were on full display.
Add in the possibility that Barcelona could bring back Emerson from his loan at Real Betis, there really would be no place for Roberto.
Selling him would be a rather surprising development as he’s an academy product and is the team’s fourth captain. However, his contract is set to expire in June 2022 and if he has no spot on the team then the only solution would be to seek an exit.
Barcelona had been working on a contract extension with Roberto but were only offering a one-year deal. He’s reportedly looking for a multiyear deal, which is something Barcelona are reluctant to do.
Combine all those factors and this could be the beginning of the end for Roberto at Barcelona. For some, it could not come soon enough.
