Thauvin bombshell tops Liga MX headlines

The official transfer window is still weeks away but that has not stopped the Liga MX rumor mill from churning. Speculation about player movement is rampant already and one splashy move has already been confirmed.

On Friday, the Tigres revealed that they had signed French international Florian Thauvin from Olympique de Marseille. Thauvin, a 28-year-old winger and a 2018 World Cup winner with France will join André-Pierre Gignac who has done nothing but become the Tigres’ all-time leading scorer (128 goals) since joining “Los Felinos” in 2015.

The big news prompted the club to postpone the presentation of their new coach, former América and El Tri manager Miguel Herrera. But their wheeling-and-dealing has only just started, it seems.

Universal Deportes reported Saturday that Tigres management is kicking some tires over at Chivas, specifically eyeing wingback Cristián “Chicote” Calderón and forward Jesús Angulo. Calderón has fallen out of favor in Guadalajara, while Angulo could be sold off to help address financial issues, especially since the Chivas are looking to bring defender Néstor Araujo back to Liga MX from Spain.

Over at Toluca, Diablos management will be in the market for a goalie to compete with Luis García. The youngster has done a decent job but coach Héctor Cristante would love to provide the 28-year-old keeper with better competition as back-up Alfredo Saldívar has been a disappointment.

Finally, former Real Madrid and Brazil star Roberto Carlos is said to be interested in taking a job in Mexico. The 2002 World Cup champ is currently under contract with “Los Merengues” as manager of Madrid’s youth teams, but he told reporters he would not mind following in the footsteps of former teammate Santiago Solari who enjoyed a very successful rookie season as coach of Club América.
