Barcelona to strengthen attack with two summer signings
Manchester City announced back in March that their longtime attacking linchpin would leave the club at the end of his contract this summer.
Sergio “Kun” Aguero, who turns 33 next month, has scored just four goals in 18 appearances across all competitions in what has been an injury-laden season for him.
Since it was revealed that the Argentine international would leave City, he has been persistently linked to Barcelona and a recent report from Fabrizio Romano claims that he will accept a two-year contract from the Catalan club with a salary lower than €10m.
It has also been said that Aguero hopes to sign for the Blaugrana after the Champions League final against Chelsea next week.
Depay might finally make move to Barcelona
Romano’s report also talks about Memphis Depay – another player who has been linked to Barça for some time now. The Dutch international has had a pretty good season with Lyon, amassing 22 goals and ten assists in 39 appearances across all competitions so far.
It has been claimed that Barca are offering the 27-year-old a contract until 2023 or 2024.
Barca have a fairly decent attack with Lionel Messi impressing as usual, notching 38 goals and 14 assists in 47 matches so far while Antoine Griezmann seems to be finding his rhythm at the club.
However, a few more options in that department would do them well, particularly a replacement for Luis Suarez. Aguero with his quality and experience could play that role for a few years. However, one issue with the 32-year-old is his fitness as we have seen how injuries prevented him from playing a large chunk of the 2020/21 season.
Having Aguero might also help the Blaugrana to persuade Messi to stay.
Depay has rediscovered himself at Lyon following a disappointing spell at Manchester United, garnering 77 goals and 56 assists since joining the Ligue 1 outfit. The Dutchman recently posted a cryptic tweet regarding his future, suggesting that he might go to a new club.
Signing Depay would definitely bolster Barca’s attack and having managed him in the Netherlands national team, Ronald Koeman could get the best out of the 27-year-old at the Blaugrana.
It will be interesting to see if the La Liga giants are able to sign both Aguero and Depay. If they do so, add a good centre-back and the club should be good to go.
