Manchester United are working on a deal to secure the signature of Villarreal defender Pau Torres and are reportedly on the verge of strengthening their defense for the next season.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are desperate to sign a new central defender in the current transfer window and have identified Torres as their primary target.

Torres has been the star defender for Villareal last season and Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is convinced that the 24-year-old Spanish defender could bring solidity to their backline.

Manchester United were miserably defeated by Villarreal in the UEFA Europa League final last month and Pau was the rock solid defender in the Spanish club’s backline.

Torres is one of the five shortlisted defenders and the Spaniard is valued around £50 million, which is very affordable compared to the Real Madrid centre back Raphael Varane – who might cost a whopping £80 million.

The English Premier League giants are keeping their options wide open to sign another central defender who can form a perfect defensive partnership with Harry Maguire.

Torres reportedly has a £60 million release clause, which sounds reasonable for the 24-year-old La Liga star in today’s transfer market.

Torres not only player United interested in

Manchester United will try their best to spend money on players who are actually worth the transfer market and are very keen on securing Borussia Dortmund’s attacking English sensation Jadon Sancho for £75 million.

Torres is a left footed centre back and would perfectly fit in the Red Devils back four, his aerial threat and ability to shoot from long range could be massive addition for the Premier League side in competing with their rival clubs Liverpool and Manchester City next season.
