Manchester United set to strengthen backline with two LaLiga stars

The summer signings look set to continue at Manchester United as they’ve set their sights to the defense after locking in Jadon Sancho from Manchester United.

According to Marca, the Red Devils are close to securing deals on both Real Madrid center-back Raphaël Varane and Ateltico Madrid right-back Kieran Trippier. Varane has reportedly agreed on personal terms with the club and they are expected to present an offer soon.

Real Madrid want €70 million for the French defender but Man United are only willing to spend €55 million.

Varane had been linked with a move away from Real Madrid as soon as the season ended as he felt it was time for a change of scenery. His situation, and stance, did not change even with the departure of Sergio Ramos.

It is believed a resolution will be met with Varane ending up in the Premier League as his contract is set to expire in 2022 and Real Madrid do not want to risk losing him as a free agent.

Over on the other side of the Spanish capital, Trippier also looks to be headed back to England.

According to the Manchester Evening News, the player is confident of a move to Manchester United will end up happening.

Similar to Varane, Trippier is entering the final year of his contract and Atletico Madrid are willing to sell him for the right price.

He’s spent the last two seasons in Spain where he won the title with Atletico last season. A hurdle, however, might be that Aaron Wan-Bissaka is the team’s starting right-back and Trippier is not going to want to be second choice.

The defense was a liability for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjær so it is no surprise the club is being aggressive in finding improvements. Should these deals go through, Trippier and Varane, alongside Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw, Manchester United, on paper, are going to have one of the best backlines in the league.
