A deal between Barcelona and the Lionel Messi no longer appears imminent

Lionel Messi’s Barcelona future was the biggest issue on Barcelona president Joan Laporta’s plate. For a while now a deal between the two sides was said to be close with only his signature the only thing left remaining.

The plan was for Messi to be present at the Joan Gamper game against Juventus this weekend and give his usual speech before the start of the season.

Whether he’ll be there is uncertain after a report by Marca claims that a renewal is “almost impossible” and the club is studying how to best break the news to supporters.

A meeting took place between representatives from both sides where they came to a conclusion that the Argentine is farther away from signing than ever before.

Barcelona’s financial mess has proven to truly come back and haunt the Catalans. In order to renew Messi, they would still need to offload a number of players which would have left the squad severely weakened for the upcoming season.

One of the main conditions Messi set in order to sign with any team was to ensure the club had an important sporting project. Messi wants to compete and it is no secret how much he covets winning the Champions League.

Should Messi not renew, it will be a huge blow to Barcelona as they’ve been adamant an agreement was close and it was one of the things Joan Laporta ran on. The last thing he wants is to be known as the president that lost Messi.

Things are at a standstill at the moment until news from either side filters out. But at the moment, it appears that Messi is not going to renew and will be putting an end to his Barcelona career.
