The 20-year-old has become an instrumental part of his club’s success
Curtis Jones, the Liverpool academy prospect-turned first-teamer, has made quite the impact on the field.
The midfielder hit a rocket over the weekend to score against Brentford and then followed it up with a Man of the Match performance in the Champions League against Porto. Not a bad few days for the Liverpool lad.
Curtis Jones made his 50th appearance for his boyhood club just a week ago. He was quick to take to Twitter and thank his supporters.
Jones possesses the quality and traits to become a Liverpool great before it’s all said and done. Obviously, at 20 years old, there’s still a lot to be done and to prove but Jones is on the right track.
He has shown the ability to work out of tight pressure-packed spaces, pick out passes that stretch the opposition, score goals when asked upon and win duels in the middle of the park. Qualities that even Steven Gerrard himself would be proud of.
Speaking of Gerrard, Jones has some Liverpool supporters reminiscing about the great No. 8 when they watch the youngster play.
Jones reminds me of a mix of Gerrard and Jordan Henderson, though on a smaller scale.
Similar to those great players, he has the calmness about him to possess the ball when needed, the confidence to take players on and create chances, the passing and tackling ability to play and start in a highly talented midfield. And he has an undying love for his club.
He might have better feet and be more gifted in the attacking third than the Liverpool legends previously mentioned, but as I said, Jones still has a long way to go before the Kop are ready to claim him as a club legend.
Jurgen Klopp summed it up well when he spoke to the media about Jones’ performance following the 3-3 draw against Brentford.
"“Curtis is a top player,” Klopp said. “He is still a talent but a really, really good package and you felt that tonight. I thought he played a really good game. He won in the first half the best balls for us pretty much – he was really good in these situations.“On top of that, he was involved in all football situations. He dropped in the right space, he was brave in between the lines, so many good things. But that’s football – he’s still young and consistency is then maybe sometimes a little bit of [an] issue. But in this moment he is in a really good moment and old enough to keep that moment going.”Source: Liverpoolfc.com"
Jones is young and his consistency is what will set him apart in the years to come but for now, the future looks bright for the Liverpool native.
