Barcelona is set to announce that they have reached an agreement on a contract extension with Pedri.

Amidst the financial turmoil, securing the future of Pedri was of utmost importance to Barcelona given the midfielder’s meteoric rise since arriving at the club only last season.

Not only did the 18-year solidify himself in the Barcelona midfield, he also became an integral part of Luis Enrique’s Spain squad. The Catalans knew they needed to tie him down or risk losing him.

Barcelona include a historic release clause in Pedri’s contract

According to Sport, Barcelona could announce the deal as early as Friday. Pedri’s contract will see him extend his stay until June 2026.

When he was initially signed, his release clause was set at €400 million. His new deal comes with a bump in said clause now standing at €1 billion. He becomes the first player in Barcelona history to have such a high release clause. Antoine Griezmann had come the closest at €800 million.

Pedri is out injured at the moment but it is evident he is one of a handful of players the club hope to build their future around. Despite the tough run of fixtures coming up, they are not going to risk him getting injured any further.

He played a lot last season and had little to no break after playing with Spain in Euro 2020 and in the Olympics. He picked up an injury early on in the season and was rushed back for the Champions League match against Bayern Munich, suffering another injury in the process.

With Pedri close to putting ink to paper on a new contract, one of the club’s top priorities is now complete. The next item on their list is reaching a deal with another young starlet, Ansu Fati.
